We’re back with episode 2 of Magic City, and baby the 90s were THAT era. Between ‘90 and ‘96, Magic City wasn’t just a strip club—it was the playground for celebs before they blew up. Tupac, Ice Cube, and the whole crew passed through before they were icons.
The House That Magic Built 🏠
Mr. Magic finally bought his first house, but his wife was shielding their son from what dad really did. She wasn’t feeling the strip club life, but she still tried to guide the dancers, telling them they didn’t have to live that life. Meanwhile, Mr. Magic’s son was literally running around the club as money piled up in the back room.
Drugs in the Air 💊
The 90s meant drugs everywhere—coke, ecstasy, you name it. Magic City was fueled by drug money, and ecstasy even found its way to the dancers. Strawberry kept it real: this was survival, but also dangerous. She knew two women who were killed and left in a rental car. One mother even left the casket open to show what happened.
Enter the Music 🎵
DC Brain Supreme asked if Magic needed a DJ. Magic said, “Nah, but can you cook?” Eventually, he got his shot when the morning DJ dipped—and never looked back. His first big booty-shake anthem? Whoomp! There It Is—with Magic City girls in the video. The formula: stripper music had to hit hard, but not too hard. Something women could swing their hair to.
And yes, the colonizer (Drake cameo again 🙄) had something to say, but we ignored it.
Drama in the Club 💥
Platinum vs. Strawberry: Deion “No-Bladder” Sanders (as in, the man with the missing toes) almost sparked a dancer brawl, offering Platinum a $50k watch if she beat Strawberry up. Mr. Magic had to shut it down.
Money pressures were real: nails, hair, clothes, titties, even childcare—it all added up fast. Stripping was a means to an end, but Mr. Magic made sure the girls had sisterhood and support.
Hip-Hop & The Strip Club 🎤
This was the dawn of southern hip-hop.
Jermaine Dupri was running Atlanta, and OutKast was recording hits while breaking songs at Magic. Bombs Over Baghdad got its first wild crowd reaction inside Magic City. Some dancers even ended up in the video. JD even brought Janet Jackson into Magic—yes, THEE Janet Jackson. That’s when people realized strip clubs were the heartbeat of breaking new music in Atlanta.
Trouble with the Law 🚨
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics brought a crackdown. The infamous Red Dog Squad police unit started sweeping Georgia, pushing out drug dealers and raiding clubs.
And the drama didn’t stop there—Gail Barney (Mr. Magic’s wife) went to Tennessee, only to come back on a first-class flight with her husband and find their house swarmed with agents. Her man left the airport in handcuffs.
