When it comes to sports commentary, Stephen A. Smith will say anything for a headline—but this time, he said the wrong thing about the wrong couple.
During a February episode of First Take, Stephen A. decided to offer some unsolicited “husband advice” about Serena Williams’ Super Bowl cameo—claiming that if his wife ever performed the way Serena did (allegedly throwing playful shade at ex-fling Drake), it would be “disrespectful.”
Well, fast-forward to this week, and Serena’s real husband—Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian—had time.
Ohanian popped up on First Take and confronted Stephen directly, saying:
“Stephen A., I think you had some marriage advice for me? You haven’t been married before, right?”
Whew. The way the whole studio went silent? You could hear the shade.
Stephen tried to clean it up, admitting that his words were “poorly phrased” and that he didn’t mean it as a personal jab. But the internet wasn’t letting it slide—especially since Ohanian has long been known as one of the most supportive husbands in sports, constantly cheering Serena on and calling her his “greatest inspiration.”
Even Cam Newton chimed in, saying Stephen should “leave marriage convos to the married.”
Now, while Stephen might still think he was just “doing his job,” Ohanian showed that he’s not the one to play with when it comes to his wife—or her legacy.
Because one thing’s for sure: Serena doesn’t need defending, but it’s nice to see her man ready to serve a few words right back. 💅🏽🎾
